Learning to swim doesn’t always mean doing straight laps or following strict instructions. Quite the opposite! For children, play is often the best ally for learning. It helps them develop the right reflexes, become familiar with water… and have fun at the same time. Here’s a selection of water games that help kids improve without even realizing it.
1. The sunken treasure
Throw a sinking object (ring, coin, weighted toy) into the water and ask the child to retrieve it.
What it develops: breath-holding, breathing control, underwater orientation, and self-confidence.
2. Sharks and minnows
One player is the “shark” and tries to catch the “fish” while swimming. Once caught, a fish also becomes a shark.
What it develops: speed, endurance, quick direction changes, and water confidence.
3. The human tunnel
Children line up with their legs apart or arms forming circles. One child swims through all the “tunnels” without coming up for air.
What it develops: breath control, propulsion, and coordination.
4. Obstacle course
Set up floating noodles, kickboards, hoops… and create a course to complete by swimming under, over, or around the objects.
What it develops: variety of movements, balance, and the joy of overcoming challenges.
Why does it work?
When children play, they’re relaxed. They explore, experiment, and learn — without fear of failure. Play allows them to learn through enjoyment and build confidence in the water, which is key to becoming a good swimmer.
Bonus tip
These games can be played not only in the pool, but also at the beach (with supervision, of course) — solo, with friends, or as a family.
